Case Study: Operator Saves USD 7.2 Million with Improved Drilling Performance and Sets New Field Benchmark
Drilling Engineering Solutions (DES) helps operator reduce drilling with potential savings of USD 115 million across field
CHALLENGE – These shallow-water wells were typically drilled in about 93–105 days because of many factors, such as trajectory management, bit selection, limited hole cleaning, and bit hydraulic power design. Thus, the rate of penetration (ROP) and the additional time spent for hole cleaning were not optimal. To keep its operations economically viable as the price of oil declined, the operator sought to significantly reduce drilling time and operating costs by improving drilling performance with DES solutions.
SOLUTION – DES brings an integrated approach by combining the expertise of Halliburton product service lines Sperry Drilling, Baroid, and Drill Bits and Services (DBS); and supporting the project with multidisciplinary teams of experts in drilling systems, drilling fluid, drill-bit design and optimization, geosteering, and survey management. DES includes SHIELD risk mitigation, NAV drilling efficiency, and PRO well productivity improvement.
In collaboration with operator, the DES team used DrillingXpert™ Software, which is able to seamlessly integrate an entire drilling system in one comprehensive package that includes drilling models and integrated processes from Sperry Drilling, Baroid, and DBS on a single platform, as well as NAV drilling efficiency solutions to perform detailed well studies, identifying ways to minimize rig complexity and mitigate risks at the beginning of the engineering process.
The DES execution team used the SHIELD risk mitigation solution to conduct real-time evaluations of the hydraulic model to optimize drilling parameters and increase ROP, while ensuring well integrity. After joint discussions, the operator and DES teams developed a new drilling solution to deliver an optimal well path trajectory, a drill bit with proven performance in a similar formation, a higher hydraulic power to the bit, a better bit-nozzle position, and an optimal drillpipe selection to allow higher flow rates and better hole cleaning. This new drilling solution allowed the operator to drill at a faster rate than previous solutions could.
