Germany sends ships to tackle oil spill in North Sea

A German federal police helicopter spotted a 50-kilometre-long oil spill in the North Sea on Friday.

The spill was a described as a “narrow” trail about 300 metres wide that contained oil clumps drifting on the water.

It was located west of Helgoland, a small German archipelago.

The maritime emergencies command has ordered several ships to the area to fight the spill.

The source of the oil was unknown.
