Women 20: Buenos Aires set to host the W20 Summit

The engagement group of the G20 that works for the economic development of women will hold its final event on the first days of October.

Buenos Aires, September 4th, 2018 – From October 1st to 3rd, Buenos Aires will host the Women 20 (W20) International Summit. The event will take place at the Kirchner Cultural Center (CCK) and will have more than 1000 attendees, including national and international references on gender issues.

The W20 Summit will conclude a year of work in the international dialogue, in which the delegates of the 20 member countries will prepare the final Communiqué with the recommendations to be delivered to G20 leaders, including action plans to ensure the full economic development of women.

The final recommendations of W20 Argentina will revolve around the focus topics on which the group has been working since it took office: labor, digital and financial inclusion of women and, as a fourth focus topic, the development of rural women. This last focus topic was included in this W20 edition to make these women more visible since they are not usually represented in international forums of these characteristics.

On October 1st, the delegates’ private work session will be held to define and sign the final communiqué. On October 2nd and 3rd, public sessions will be available at the CCK Symphony Hall (Sarmiento 151, CABA).

Some of the speakers who will participate in the public sessions include:

Phumzile MLAMBO-NGCUKA, UN Women Executive Director

Lilianne Ploumen, member of the Dutch parliament and Founder of the She Decides Movement

Chetna Sinha, Founder of Mann Deshi

Gabriela Ramos, Sherpa of the OECD for the G20

Furthermore, the organizations that were involved in the development of W20 content throughout the year and led the work in the different focus topics will be present: Topic Chairs EY, GSMA and UN Women.

Susana Balbo, Chair of the W20, stated: “The summit is the culmination of a year’s work together with international civil society that strives for greater and better opportunities for all women. We look forward to the summit with enthusiasm for being able to offer a space for the diffusion of the most relevant work areas of our national and international dialogue. But above all, we are focused on delivering a Communiqué with high impact recommendations, so that it is well received and taken into consideration for the final Communiqué of the G20. We are confident that the gender perspective will be present in the final declaration of leaders and that each one will assume the necessary responsibilities to ensure the implementation of the action plans to narrow the gender gap.”

Women 20 is an engagement group and a transnational network that brings together women leaders of civil society, businesses, entrepreneurship ventures and think tanks. The main goal of W20 is to influence the agenda of the decision-making bodies and agendas of the G20 leaders, with a view to impacting public policies towards greater gender equality, and advocating for more prosperous and inclusive societies.

The W20 consultation process works at an international level in which the content management of the W20 manages, coordinates and moderates the contribution of all delegates representing the G20 member nations and high-profile international organizations that can influence the global political agenda. Delegates are the soul of the W20; they are in charge of raising issues and proposing actions for the leaders of the countries to commit to overcome the main obstacles on the way to achieve women’s full autonomy.
