German solar energy prize awarded
The annual award honours projects aimed at a resolute and decentralized energy transformation.
Bonn (dpa) – Electro-mobility pioneer Guenther Schuh and seven other persons have been cited for the annual German solar energy prize for 2018. The Aachen-based scientist who among other things had developed the electric-powered “Streetscooter” delivery van, was handed the award on Saturday in Bonn for his latest project, an electric-powered small car.
The four-seat vehicle which is to go into serial production at the end of the year serves as an example for the established carmakers in Germany, the citation said.
With its annual prize, Eurosolar – an association for renewable energies – pays tribute to projects and initiatives aimed at resolute and decentralized transformation of the energy sector.
This year, among the other recipients of the prize was a vocational training school in Ruesselsheim where renewable energy projects have been on the teaching curriculum for years.
Also cited was a project in the city of Cottbus, where two multi-family buildings were equipped to cover up to 75 per cent of their energy needs with the help of solar energy panels and storage units. This enables the tenants to pay a stable, long-term overall rent covering their apartment, electricity and heating.
