NGC achieves Gold Standard status of reporting under the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP)
The NGC Group have been hard at work implementing and expanding our Green Agenda portfolio of initiatives, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of our business. Methane emissions from our operations has been a priority focus since, over a 20-year period, this greenhouse gas, which is the main component of natural gas, has an 80 times greater potential for global warming than carbon dioxide.
In addition to being a priority for NGC, reducing methane is also high on the national agenda. The government of Trinidad and Tobago has agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2030 as part of the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Climate Agreement. The country has also pledged to reduce methane emission by at least 30 percent from 2020 levels by 2030 as part of the Global Methane Pledge of which more than 100 countries worldwide have signed on to.
As part of our methane focus, we voluntarily joined the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) in 2021. The OGMP is a multi-stakeholder global partnership to improve the accuracy and transparency of methane emissions reporting, which is key to methane mitigation in the oil and gas sector. Mr. Mark Louan, President NGC said, “We were the first state energy company to join this group, and we submitted our first report to the OGMP earlier this year. NGC has achieved Gold Standard status of reporting under the OGMP 2.0 framework. This achievement is attained by companies with clearly elaborated targets to reduce methane emissions by 2025 and represents an international acknowledgement of the work we have committed to do over the coming years. This creditable achievement was revealed in the second edition of the UNEP International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) publication, An Eye on Methane, which was launched October 2022 in Abu Dhabi.”
