High Speed Bypass Switch for High Voltage DC Systems

0

Siemens is seeking development and supply of a high speed swtich for high voltage applications and maintenance-free cooling of PLC Modules. We believe you have the expertise to respond to these opportunities.
Description
Development and / or supply of a high speed bypass switch for high voltage DC applications.
The switch is part of every level in High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) and Static VAR compensator (SVC) multilevel converters.
Background
Siemens Energy Management is a partner to develop and / or supply HVDC and SVC multilevel converters.
In HVDC and SVC converters many power modules are connected in series. To ensure a highly reliable and uninterrupted converter operation a device to bypass a failed power module is needed. The voltage level of every power module is given by available Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs). If a power module should fail a fast bypass switch has to be closed. The bypass switch remains closed after a single ignition.
Key Success Criteria
Siemens Energy Management is seeking:
New approaches for high speed, high voltage bypass switching
That have the potential to meet the specifications of the current bypass switches used in Siemens systems
Can be developed in approximately 12 months
The specifications of the current bypass switch we use are:
Bypass switch for voltage class between 3.3 kV and 6.5 kV
Closing time equal to, or lower than, 10 ms
Current higher than 1500 Amps
Better performance than above, if possible, is welcome
Possible Approaches
Siemens is open to all possible solutions for example, but not limited to:
Electrical
Mechanical
Semi-conductor
Vacuum tube
Pre-tensioned springs or equivalent
Other solutions are most welcome.
Approaches not of interest
Siemens is open to all possible solutions.
