Scale-up: H2EXPO & CONFERENCE focuses on European value-added projects on the topic of green hydrogen
The latest processes for scaled-up electrolyser performance, offshore wind turbines with integrated electrolysers for H2 generation, and expanded hydrogen infrastructure. Within a few years, a complete value chain will be created on an industrial scale in Germany and Northern Europe. With a high-quality conference programme and parallel exhibition, the Hamburg H2EXPO & CONFERENCE will provide over two days in June information on the latest projects as well as state of the art technologies, guidelines, and procedures.
“The energy transition must be approached holistically. When it comes to ensuring grid stability and replacing fossil fuels in the steel and chemicals industries, green hydrogen is the key”, says Andreas Arnheim, Project Director of H2EXPO & CONFERENCE at Hamburg Messe und Congress (HMC). Climate-neutral green hydrogen is indispensable when it comes to moving away from fossil fuels quickly and across all sectors. Northern Europe is well positioned to test and rapidly implement climate-friendly practices. The H2EXPO & CONFERENCE will show how national and international technology drivers can take the lead in the race for market shares.
Forecast: Europe will reach 1 GW of installed hydrogen capacity in 2023
Last year, national strategies and instruments were launched worldwide in order to promote the market ramp-up of green hydrogen with government support. For example, the “Hydrogen Business Model”, the “Inflation Reduction Act” (IRA), and “H2Global” were launched in the UK, the US, and Germany, respectively. According to the white paper published by the energy transformation specialists at LCP Delta in February 2023, the programmes work. In 2023, the installed hydrogen capacity in Europe will increase by more than 800% to 1–2 GW. According to the analysts, investment decisions must also be made for a further 7.3 GW in order to be able to achieve the climate targets set.

Key hydrogen projects: with a big push forward
In April 2021, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) announced the start of three key hydrogen projects. These projects will actively support and promote the implementation of the National Hydrogen Strategy.
• The aim of H2 GIGA is to bring high-performance electrolysers into series production.
• The aim of H2MARE is to research offshore hydrogen generation and other power-to-X products.
• The aim of TransHyDE is to promote the development of an efficient and functioning hydrogen infrastructure for locally produced green hydrogen as well as the expected large-scale import of green hydrogen from partner states.
Numerous technology leaders and energy suppliers are already participating in the various projects. And there is room for further innovation. Companies that would like to contribute their approaches can contact project management Jülich. Further information is available here: www.wasserstoff-leitprojekte.de
Standardise quality: Standardisation Roadmap Hydrogen Technologies
On 1 January 2023, the joint project “Standardisation Roadmap Hydrogen Technologies”, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), was launched. It aims to create a uniform understanding and set of rules for hydrogen technologies and interfaces as quickly as possible. In order to achieve this, various associations, societies and commissions work together in interdisciplinary committees. These include the German Institute for Standardisation (DIN), the Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches e. V. (DVGW), and the Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau e.V. (VDMA).
The fulfilment of security and system requirements as well as the definition of testing and certification guidelines are on the to-do list. Specialists from research, business and politics are involved in the working groups. The quality infrastructure that is being created provides planning and investment security for all those involved along the H2 value chain and actively contributes to the rapid expansion of technology. https://wasserstoffwirtschaft.sh/de/2023-02-08_strategischer-fahrplan-fuer-die-wasserstoffnormung
How dynamically is the hydrogen value chain developing? And what are the thematic hotspots of the industry? The answers to these questions will be found on 28 and 29 June 2023 in the hydrogen metropolitan region of Hamburg. The second edition of H2EXPO & CONFERENCE offers participants a centrally located platform for individual knowledge transfer and excellent networking opportunities.
H2EXPO & CONFERENCE – the networking event of the international hydrogen economy
H2EXPO & CONFERENCE, the international meeting place for the entire hydrogen industry – from production and distribution to use – will take place from 28 to 29 June 2023 in Hall B6 on the grounds of Hamburg Messe und Congress. Over two days, the event offers an attractive networking platform for stakeholders from politics, science and business to discuss the latest trends and the future of the international hydrogen economy.
H2 technology providers from Germany and abroad will present their solutions, innovations and projects. The focus of the event will be a high-quality conference programme with top speakers, who will discuss regulation, technologies and the future of hydrogen. By the way: Every two years (even-numbered years), H2EXPO & CONFERENCE takes place in parallel to WindEnergy Hamburg, the leading global trade fair for the wind industry. The next joint event will be held in 2024. www.h2expo.de
