ENVision System Monitoring Emissions at First Solution Polyethylene Plant in Middle East

0

Sadara Chemical Company’s Polyethylene Train 1 made history in December 2015 when it began operations in Jubail Industrial City II, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The first of 26 integrated world-scale manufacturing facilities that will form the world’s largest chemical complex built in a single phase, the plant is also the first outside the US to implement Wood Group’s ENVision emissions monitoring system.

Wood Group Mustang’s Automation and Control business unit worked with Sadara and its partners for three years, designing the environmental compliance monitoring systems for all 26 facilities. They recently implemented the system for this first plant and trained Sadara’s environmental engineers and IT personnel on its use. The systems for the other 25 facilities will be implemented as they become operational.
There was another uncommon aspect to the project.
“The Kingdom’s environmental regulations for these areas were undergoing a comprehensive revision simultaneous with the construction of the Sadara complex,” explained Philip Black, who leads Wood Group Mustang’s environmental practice. “We were designing the compliance model based on a previous draft, knowing a new set would be in effect when the plant went into operation. When the regulations were finalized in September 2015, it was a challenge to review them and adjust our design before the beginning of operation, but we successfully met the deadline.”
The Sadara Chemical Company is a joint venture developed by Saudi Aramco and The Dow Chemical Company. Its world-scale chemical complex in Jubail Industrial City II in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province is the only chemical complex in the Middle East to use refinery liquids as feedstock, thus opening up new value chains for downstream manufacturing.
“The Sadara complex will be a key contributor to Saudi Arabia’s industrial diversification. We are honored to be providing the environmental management system that will continue to ensure it meets its commitment to delivering the highest level of environmental sustainability,” stated Philip.
