Africa: Technical Cooperation Side Events at the 70th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference
From 14 to 18 September, the IAEA will hold the 70th Regular Session of the General Conference, where national representatives and technical experts will come together to discuss the IAEA’s ongoing work and address various issues in the field of nuclear science and technology.
During the week-long conference, the Department of Technical Cooperation (TC) will host two side events highlighting the IAEA’s support to countries, including unlocking funds to expand radiation medicine services and supporting the development of the nuclear sector in Africa. In addition, national representatives to the TC programme’s four regional cooperative agreements — AFRA, ARCAL, ARASIA and RCA — will hold meetings ahead of and during the week of the conference.
Success Stories in Financing the Scaling up of Radiation Medicine
This event will highlight the successes of several countries in securing financing to scale up radiotherapy, with IAEA assistance in developing strategic funding documents (bankable documents).
Countries that received assistance through these techno-economic feasibility studies will report on how they raised hundreds of millions of euros from domestic sources, development agencies, international financial institutions and others.
Speakers will highlight key success factors, such as advocating for cancer as a priority in national development agendas, a sound business case and a sustainable investment, and radiation safety and security. Financing partners will also share their perspectives.
The event will be held on Thursday, 17 September 2026, from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. in Conference Room CR5, C Building, seventh floor.
Building the Next Generation of Nuclear Leaders: The African Experience
This event will explore how leadership development helps build a sustainable global nuclear sector, with a particular focus on Africa’s emerging nuclear power programmes. Experts will discuss human performance, workforce development, knowledge transfer, youth engagement, and the impact of advanced nuclear technologies and artificial intelligence on the nuclear workforce and the sector. The discussion will draw on IAEA-supported initiatives and national perspectives. Through short presentations, panel discussions and audience interaction, participants will examine practical approaches to building resilient, future-ready nuclear organizations and cultivating the next generation of nuclear leaders.
This event will be held on Thursday, 17 September 2026, from 3.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. in Conference Room M6, M Building, ground floor.

Throughout the conference, the Department of Technical Cooperation will host an exhibition showcasing the impact of the technical cooperation programme across various fields of activity, alongside its latest outreach materials and publications.
